The Philpott Lake Project
This project began with the discovery of 50 identical postcards at a local junk shop. Contributing artist were recruited through the International Union of Mail Artists (http://iuoma-network.ning.com/) and the cards were sent off across the globe to be altered.
Less than a week later little works of art began arriving in my mailbox, first from Richmond, then France. Each one was a beautiful re-imagination of the lake. Entire worlds were contained in the 4x5 space, often accompanied by elaborate myths or legends.
In the end, I received almost 40 pieces from over a dozen participating countries; Australia, Canada, China, Denmark, England, France, Greece, Italy, Paraguay, Portugal, Russia, Spain, the U.S. and the Ukraine. The works incorporate a variety of mediums including; oil paint, pen and pencil, origami, collage, mixed media, photography, poetry, digital alteration, cut paper, rubber stamps and stitching.
The entire project, including the backs of the postcards, can be seen at PhilpottLakeProject.tumblr.com, please take a look and share it with your friends.
Exhibited in 2016 at Piedmont Virginia Community College, Charlottesville, VA.
